Toddler Taming & The Terrible Two’s

Of course, the above title is a joke, there isn’t a way to tame toddlers, they are free-spirited little souls rightfully so. Trying to create boundaries can be like wading through a pool of treacle. Toddler taming is definitely a myth.

Daisy is well into the throes of the ‘Terrible Two’s’ but not in the usual throwing tantrums in the middle of the supermarket kind of way. With Daisy, it’s more an ‘I’m going to do exactly whatever I want even if you say no’ kind of way.

Daisy has always had a fantastic vocabulary since she said her first word, which was ‘Belly Button’ by the way. Sentences like ‘me not want to’, ‘you do not tell me no’ and ‘it tastes horrible’ are becoming extremely popular with her.

In the past couple of weeks, she has learnt how to unlock the back door, open the fridge and help herself to grapes, cheese and whatever she can get her hands on, climb onto her windowsill (windows are locked of course), turn taps on and completely undress herself, all this happens while I’m indisposed feeding Jake!

While a lot of what she does is incredibly funny and impressive it’s also potentially dangerous and I’m sprinting to keep ahead of her escapades. Of course, we explain to her why she can’t do something and try to be reasonable.

How do you discipline a toddler who enjoys going on the ‘naughty step’ (yes we have one, don’t judge) or who can give you a pretty reasonable argument as to why she did something? How do you stop yourself when you burst to laugh, honestly a lot of her escapades are hilarious and impressive.

I’ve come to the conclusion that we will just muddle along, take practical steps like emptying her bedroom of anything she can stand on, and fool ourselves that we are in charge.

Sorry if you thought from the title you thought you were going to find practical steps for taming a toddler or dealing with the terrible twos. I guess we are just ‘fly by the seat of our pants’ parents, it’s worked for us so far.

  1. Ha! This seems all too familiar to me. I too have a strong willed little one, I'd like to say it gets easier but… sorry, it doesn't 🙂 at least it makes life a little bit more lively. Good luck x

  2. sounds like me as tot – climbed out 1st floor window onto garage roof aged 18 months… left house crossed main rd, took a Mars bar from shop, crossed main rd – at age 2!

  3. THIS TO WILL PASS!! There's nothing worse than your two year old being a monkey while you're feeding your baby – I've been there, twice. You'll be through the other side before you know it x

  4. my little girl is going through very similiar behaviours although she is very much throw herself on the floor with it and scream at top of her lungs. I'm like you and just taking it day by day in the hope that it will be a phase but being firm and fair with her will pay off xx

  5. Haha you're right! There is no way on earth you can tame anyone, let alone a toddler! They live by a whole different set of rules! Fab post 🙂 x x x
