Word of the Week – Diabetic

This weeks word of the week is diabetic, for the past two years I have had my blood checked regularly as I had gestational diabetes with both my recent pregnancies so I was already classed as high risk for developing the disease, despite knowing this fact I chose to bury my head in the sand telling myself I would make the changes I needed to make tomorrow, next week or at the start of another month but I never did.

word of the week (2)

On Wednesday morning my doctor spoke the words I was expecting to hear, I knew i hadn’t escaped it this time my symptoms had steadily become worse in the last six months and I could no longer pretend that the exhaustion, pain, thirst and hunger were just down to being a busy and stressed mum of two under 5’s.

‘You are diabetic’

Even though I knew it’s still hard to hear, lots of people think that type 2 diabetes isn’t that serious and if you are one of them like I was then please do some research as the complications that can arise from not controlling it are quite frankly frightening.

I have to make so many changes to both my diet and my lifestyle that some days it all seems a little daunting but I have to remind myself that I can do this, I can feel well again.

I’ve started on medication which will help to control the diabetes and I have an appointment with the diabetes team at my doctors surgery and also with a dietitian and I’m determined to learn all I can from them so I can help myself.

If anyone has any advice for me or wants to share their experience of diabetes then please leave me a comment below.

I’m linking up with Jocelyn at The Reading Residence for Word of the Week.

Real Handful Snacks – Review & Giveaway

I first tried a sample of Real Handful snacks earlier this month at the Blog On MSI conference, I tried Mochaccino and Banoffee mixes which were both delicious so I was delighted when the brand got in touch and asked if I would like to try one of their hand packed ration boxes and an extra one to offer as a prize to one of my lovely readers.

Real Handful are a healthier impulse snack, they come in a variety of flavours and contain a mix of the best quality dried fruits, whole nuts and seeds with added ingredients like natural flavours, chocolate and yoghurt. Not only are they tasty and delicious they are ideal as an on the go snack or an afternoon pick me up when you need a little extra fuel.

The ration box I tried contained the following flavours:

Strawberries & Cream – A Summer time blend of juicy strawberry flavoured raisins, strawberries, cranberries, white chocolate chunks and cashews.

Blood Orange & Dark Chocolate – A fabulous blend of blood orange flavoured sultanas, orange flavoured cranberries, dark chocolate and peanuts.

Blueberry Blitz – A vibrant blend of blueberries, blueberry flavoured cranberries, jumbo flame raisins and whole cashews.

Mixed Berry Crunch – A very berry blend of blueberry yoghurt raisins, strawberries, cranberries and whole Almonds.

My favourite flavour is the Blueberry Blitz the combination of flavours and the chunky cashews taste so delicious, Daisy tried the snacks with me and she loved the Mixed Berry Crunch especially the blueberry yoghurt raisins, we shared a bag as an afternoon snack as the portions are really generous.

I’m really impressed with the quality of the ingredients, everything tasted as described and the dried fruit was so juicy and all the combinations I tried blended so well together.

You can buy Real Handful snacks at Holland & Barrett, Ocado and Harris & Hoole, if you order online from Holland & Barrett and enter the code ‘REALHANDFUL’ at the checkout you can try the snacks for 99p until June 8th.

Review: Sweetpea Pantry Chocolate Giggles

Back in May I was lucky enough to win a competition over on Beth Bear blog, the prize was from Sweetpea Pantry who make bake at home mixes for children made with super foods.

The lovely lady at Sweetpea Pantry let me choose between receiving a product a month for the next three months as they offer a subscription service or to choose three of their lovely products all in one go, I chose to have them all at once.

I chose the Grainy Brainy Pancakes which we enjoyed a few weeks ago for breakfast, they were delicious and so filling, Daisy loved them.

We also chose Super Oat Flapjack which we enjoyed making last week, it was so east to make and Daisy loved mixing it altogether and licking the spoon of course.

Then finally we chose Chocolate Giggles which we made this afternoon, below are some photo’s of the fun we had making them and of course munching them afterwards.

The ingredients include whole-grain rye, barley and Cacao.

We chose to make ‘Planets’ and ‘Stars’ but you can use whatever cookie cutters you have at home.

They have Daisy’s seal of approval, of course she asked for seconds.

I really am impressed with all the products we have tried, all the mixes were easy for Daisy to help make which as you would have seen in previous posts she loves mixing and baking with Mummy.

They have all tasted delicious which I was surprised at as some of the ingredients are not what you would usually expect to find in such goodies.

*I won a prize from Sweetpea Pantry but all opinions are my own and are honest*

We are certainly fans of Sweetpea Pantry and will be trying the rest of the varieties in the future.
