Last week Chris and I were invited sample the menu at the newly opened Formby branch of PizzaExpress. We hadn’t been to a PizzaExpress before but had heard lots of good things about their food. We were excited to not only enjoy a child free evening but also to share a delicious meal together.
The stylish new PizzaExpress opened on February 13th in the heart of Formby which is a lovely little coastal town in the North West. It’s opening has provided an additional 20 jobs within the community.
When we arrived the restaurant looked so inviting, there’s a gorgeous outside seating area that I’m sure will be very popular in the warmer months.
Once inside we were greeted and shown straight to our table by the window. I was in awe at the interior and took some time to take it all in and take some photograph’s of course. The restaurant has been designed with relaxation in mind. The interior has incorporated a rustic coastal theme in keeping with the seaside setting of Formby.
There was a feature lighting piece on the ceiling which I couldn’t take my eyes off. Even the artwork which celebrates the first British lifeboat station which was in Formby is amazing.
Once we were comfortable and our drinks has arrived it was time to order our starters. I went with a course from the Winter specials menu. I chose Pennette Formaggi which is a twist on the classic Macaroni Cheese with a three cheese and mustard sauce. It was so tasty I loved the addition of mustard, it gave the dish a little heat.
Chris and I decided to go with pizzas for out mains, choosing to order both the Winter specials. We chose to split them between us so we could each try them.
I’m so glad we had a jug of iced water on our table as the pizzas certainly were on the spicy side. We enjoyed the Barbacoa Romano and the Etna Romana. Both were as delicious as each other. I want to add a little side note here, if you do order a pizza they come unsliced. In hindsight we probably should have asked for a pizza slice as we did struggle slightly trying to cut the Romana base.
You can actually watch the pizzas being made at the Pizzaiola counter in the centre of the restaurant. These guys and girls really know what they are doing when it comes to creating the perfect dough and tasty toppings.
Throughout the lovely waitress who was looking after us came to check that everything was okay with our meal. Her timings were perfect and we never felt rushed or hassled which is one of my pet hates when dining out.
I also have to say that the restaurant has a really good selection of drinks on the menu. I went with a Peroni to keep the Italian theme going and finished off with a sparkling glass of Prosecco.
There were so many delicious desserts to choose from but I went with the mouth watering Chocolate Fondant. The warm chocolate cake had a melting centre and was topped with a vanilla gelato. It was out of this world, a pure indulgence and a real treat. Chris went with a classic chocolate fudge cake and cream which he thoroughly enjoyed.
We left having experienced excellent customer service, delicious food and a lovely relaxing atmosphere.
My only criticism of the whole experience would be the tiny table we were seated at. Although the marble topped tables are beautiful they just aren’t practical, we quickly ran out of room. The guests next to us asked for another table to be added and I’m sure had we asked we would have been obliged straight away.
PizzaExpress is now definitely on our list of places we want to dine at again. There’s lots more of their delicious menu we want to try, the pasta dishes looked amazing.
