Zero Waste Week {2013}

I’m always looking for ways to save money and one of the biggest expenses in our budget is groceries. This week (2nd-8th September) is Zero Waste Week. It’s challenging me to think about the food I waste and how I can reduce or eliminate it altogether.

You can sign up for Zero Waste Week and make a pledge to do something to reduce your food waste. I’ve pledged to buy loose produce as I’m guilty of letting potatoes and fruit go bad. The website also contains lots of fantastic ideas and recipes for leftovers.

Meal Plan

Every week I make a meal plan but I’m dreadful when it comes to sticking to it.  This means I usually end up with a lot of wasted vegetables. This week I have a bag of carrots that look a little sorry for themselves so I have decided to turn them into a really simple carrot and coriander soup. I also have half an onion and pepper in the fridge which I probably would have thrown away. Soup also freezes really well too.

Zero waste week is really inspiring me to make the effort and think outside the box about food waste. After all, I wouldn’t throw money into the bin but that’s what we are doing each time we throw food away.

What food do you always end up throwing away? Leave me a comment I love hearing from you.

  1. Thanks so much for taking the pledge and sharing the word! The soup idea sounds brilliant – I have a section on my site where people can submit their recipes; would you have time to do yours? If not, you can just email me the recipe and I'll put it up there. Enjoy the rest of the week!
