Word Of The Week-Fireworks

My word of the week had to be fireworks this week the sky has been ablaze with them. I know fireworks can be a divisive topic but I love them. From the bright dazzling colours to the exciting whizz, bangs and pops there’s just something about them that makes my heart happy.

Luckily we have a dog and a cat who are not phased one little bit by fireworks. Indie our dog is more afraid of the wind. I know this is not the case for many people.

We decided to do some fireworks at home this year in the garden, we were of course very safety conscious. I even wrote a blog post about Bonfire Night safety sharing what I had learned while researching. Most years we watch the neighbourhood displays from the bedroom windows but wanted a change this year.

The kids were very excited as the last time we had them at home they were too young to remember properly. We decided to do ours on Saturday night instead of on the official Bonfire night. Weekday nights can be busy so the weekend is best for us. We wrapped up warm and I set up a little viewing station for us at the furthest end of the garden from where Chris would be lighting the fireworks. While setting off ours we got to enjoy lots of other fireworks that were lighting up the sky at the same time.

There were lots of oohs and ahhs and some ‘is that it’s? Overall the kids loved it. After the fireworks it was time for sparklers, I had one too of course. You are never too old for a sparkler although when I was a kid I was terrified of them thanks to a brutal advertising campaign in the 80s. Does anyone remember that?

When we went back inside the kids warmed up with a hot chocolate, I also bought some Cadbury Bonfire Logs for us to enjoy.

On actual Bonfire Night, we enjoyed some more fireworks but through the windows this time. Daisy made spicy fajitas which were delicious and perfect for a chilly Bonfire Night. Afterwards, we all had some black treacle cake everyone except Jake enjoyed it. I think you needed to be a fan of treacle toffee to like the taste of it, it was quite a strong flavour and slightly bitter.

I expect there will be fireworks every night from now until the weekend at least.  The next time we see them it will be time for a new year to begin.

The rest of my week has been pretty quiet which is exactly what I needed after a busy couple of weeks. The kids both went back to school on Monday and I’ve had plenty of time to rest and potter about. I got an unexpected call for a hospital appointment due to a cancellation. I’ve been on the waiting list for 11 months and thought it would be next year before I was seen.

I’m going to get some more Christmas preparations and planning done this weekend. I plan to take full advantage of all the early supermarket offers on Christmas chocolate and gift sets.

I hope you have had a good first week of November. Do you like fireworks and Bonfire night? Leave me a comment I love to read them.

  1. To answer your questions… no, we don’t like bonfire night nor any fireworks. I know we are scaredy cats but that’s ok. Not everything is for everyone. We do like hot chocolate though. Hope your lazy and restful days go well.

  2. I totally get that there’s two camps when it comes to fireworks, you either love or hate them. I hate them but it sounds like they have brought you so much fun and happiness this week!
I remember the sparkler campaigns in the 80’s. They were terrifying!

  3. We have had over a week of constant fireworks. I do like them but they seem to get louder every year, or maybe it’s because I’m getting older. They certainly made me jump a few times. We only watched from home through the window. Our big cat had to have a pillow fort made for him and he whimpered. I’ve had lots of cats but they have never been scared of fireworks. At least the rats and mice were safe for a few nights while giant hunter cat hid under cushions!!

  4. Glad you enjoyed your home fireworks display and that your pets aren’t too bothered by fireworks. The one we went to was with quieter fireworks which we enjoyed – I like seeing fireworks but I don’t like the loud ones. I remember that ad campaign in the 1980s too and I’m also very wary about sparklers as a result although still love them! Treacle cake sounds yummy. Glad you had a quiet week and that’s good news about getting the hospital appointment through. #WotW
