One of the hardest things to do is go on an adventure by yourself. Solo travelling is not unpopular; in fact, it’s one of the most popular things that you can do at least once in life. It’s an exciting thing to do – you get to meet new people, see new places and you get to eat fresh foods with no one able to tell you where you should be going and what you should be doing.
With that in mind, we’ve got some incredible tips for setting you up for an adventure for the first time. It’s not about the passport issues or the fact you’ve already booked with the Bolsover Cruise Club for your family vacation. It’s about getting yourself motivated for going on your very first vacation alone and knowing that you are going to have a fantastic time when you go. Are you ready? Just Go
Believe it or not, the more you think about this, the more you’ll talk yourself out of it. You want to get on that cruise ship this year with your family, but you also need to steel yourself to get on that plane for your own adventure. The key is just to book it. It isn’t going to be an easy thing to do, but it’s going to be something that you can get done and feel good that you were brave enough to do it. Do whatever it takes to prepare for your vacation and get excited. Stop making excuses – it’s okay to go alone!
Always Choose to Swim
We’re not talking about diving off the bow of a boat in the crystal clear ocean here. However, when you’re on vacation on your own, there are always dangers to face that you must be aware of. We’re talking stranger danger, the dangers on strange roads, and even the dangers of drinking the local water! When it comes to sink or swim, always choose to swim! Observe the rules of the road in the place you plan to visit and get to know the cultural differences of being on the road compared to home. You want to make sure you are more than prepared for this vacation of a lifetime.
Lower Your Expectations
When you think of your ideal destination, you need to consider what image you have in your head. Are you thinking about being in transit to Hawaii, where the waves are enormous, and you can sun yourself on the beach? Well, lower those expectations – in fact, don’t have any at all! You can have all the imagination you like, but if you get there and it’s raining, it doesn’t mean that it’s a disappointment. Have an open mind and be ready for anything!
Make Some Mistakes
You’re going to be in a new place and meeting new locals. If you’re dabbling in the language and you get it wrong, the locals are going to pat you on the back for trying. The only mistakes you shouldn’t make are those that don’t affect your transport or your visa and passport. You may choose to learn how to dive, and you’re likely going to make mistakes while you learn. If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again!
Feel Wondrous
You’re doing something amazing by yourself. You’re getting on a plane and seeing the world, and you’re doing it without anyone else pushing you or directing you. You are in charge of your own adventure, able to meet whoever you like whenever you like. This should leave you in a state of wonder! Keep those rose-tinted glasses on no matter where you go, and you’ll be able to see that wonder no matter how long you stay in one place.
Stay In Touch
You’re on an adventure, but it doesn’t mean that you’ve left your loved ones forever. Keep in touch and update people on how you are, let them know you’re safe and okay on the road. Don’t be afraid to take this leap of faith, but make sure that you keep people you love in the know about where you are.
Setting yourself up for an adventure – whether that’s a hiking vacation in the Galapagos or a dive off a cruise ship in the centre of the Pacific – is one of the most important things that you can do this year. Enjoy your adventure!
