The Benefits of Putting Your Child in Summer Camp

What were some of your fondest childhood memories? Chances are, one of them must have included summer camp, right? This is one of those quintessential summer memories that people have as a kid, such as scouts as well as other kid-oriented activities outside of school. So, are you thinking about putting your little one in summer camp this year? You’ll definitely be rewarding them with memories that will forever last a lifetime; the same goes for friends too. So, here are some reasons why you should definitely consider doing this for your little one for their upcoming summer vacation!

They’ll Have Fun

Sure, while trips like road trip could be a fun vacation, why not twist things up for your kid? Being in a car for hours at a time will eventually get tiring, but when it comes to camping, the fun is nonstop! Summer camp is the perfect environment to encourage free play and to develop imaginative thinking skills. Children also learn how to work in teams, a skill that will help them throughout their lives.

Kids also have the opportunity to make new friends at summer camp. Young children often have limited peer group exposure- their social circle may only include their daycare, school, or neighbourhood friends. Camp allows them to build relationships with kids from all backgrounds, which is a great way to teach children about empathy and diversity.

Perfect for Building Resiliency

The last thing you need is for your child to have attachment issues; they need to embrace things that are different. But honestly, you can say the same about parents too, as they’re also going to be some changes. Many parents are worried about their children’s safety, especially after seeing the 24-hour news highlighting crimes in their own neighbourhoods. However, being overprotective can actually have a negative effect on your child’s growth and development. Children need to be taught to think for themselves and to be independent. Camp gives your child a chance to experience this.

Ideal for Being Social

Some of the best memories are those of children getting to interact, play, and learn team building from peers their age. Kids also build true friendships at camp. Free from the social pressures that can be so pronounced at school, they get to know each other on a more personal level. This translates to their school lives, where they are better equipped to be empathetic and understanding.

In addition to their friends, kids also get to learn from positive adult role models at camp. Typically, camp counsellors are young adults who volunteer or work part-time over their break from college. Kids see these role models as cool and often look up to them, which helps them develop a healthy sense of self-esteem and the skills to make good decisions.

They’re Out in the Great Outdoors

Don’t want your kid to play on their phone, play video games, or stay inside? Well, this is going to be the perfect solution that you can absolutely count on. Camp is all about being outside in the fresh air and engaging in physical activities, unlike the daily routine of school and homework. This helps children get exercise and develop their bodies. They get to hike, swim, play games, learn about nature, and so much more. Needless to say, it’s the perfect experience for a child!
