Word Of The Week – Phonics

This week has been dominated by phonics with parent workshops in both Daisy and Jake’s classes. I love being able to see how they learn at school. It’s really interesting to see the methods they use to teach phonics to the different age groups. I also found it slightly embarrassing at how much of the terminology they use I had to look up to see what it meant. It comes to something when your six-year-old knows more English than you do!

In Daisy’s class, we watched the kids learn tricky words using a song and a visual. There were also tables set up with lots of activities like phonics bingo and snakes and ladders. It gave me some good ideas about some simple things we can do at home to help Daisy. Her teacher also gave us some paperwork with lots of useful information on including some websites with fun games on too.

Later on, in the week, parents were invited to observe a phonics session in the nursery. Jake doesn’t really tell me anything about his mornings in school so it was lovely to be able to see for myself. The class is split into smaller groups depending upon what they need to practice with. I watched Jake play a rhyming game called silly soup which was lots of fun.

I came away with so many ideas on how to help them both with their phonics learning. Our school has lots of parent workshops throughout the school year which I think is a really good idea.

  1. I hate phonics, it is not my kind of learning nor my eldest as it is really hard for my autisitic brain to do. Most things I do is down to memory. Luckily hubby is good with phonics X #wotw

  2. I do love parent workshops at school and I have been to many. I’ve created some lovely poetry with my daughter and struggled with my little man’s math class. It’s great to see how they are learning and how we can help. #wotw

  3. Ahh! I remember the workshops at school when my girls doing phonics. I was left feeling quite dumb. The teaching has changed so much since I was at school….These things are great at school to see how the kids are getting on x

  4. Parent workshops sound like a great idea. I have to admit I still haven’t quite grasped some of the terminology used in phonics even though I’ve been helping my daughter with her phonics learning while we’ve been homeschooling together. I love the sound of the phonics bingo and snakes and ladders – sounds like a fun way to learn. #WotW

  5. I appreciated it when our school ran the phonetics workshops. So different when I learnt to read, and it helped with supporting them at home. Glad we are well and truly passed that stage. #wotw

  6. We haven’t actually had any parent workshops yet – but they sound great! It can be hard to carry the learning on at home, especially with little ones as they often don’t communicate what’s happening in the day, so it sounds like this was super useful! I’m sure it was lovely seeing how your two got on also. A lovely weekend to you! #WotW

  7. Its great to get a bit of an isight into their learning isnt it I love that about primary school. High schools really could learn so much from primary education couldnt they?

  8. Phonics is so amazing! And I also treasure those times when I am allowed to see what they are doing in school. Shows me why my son is so tired after haha. #wotw
