Every Friday I share five frugal things that I’ve done to save or make money. I believe that a frugal lifestyle is an individual thing and there is no right or wrong way of going about it. From the smallest of savings to the greatest it all adds up and contributes to us living the life that we want for less.
Five Frugal Things
- Food features heavily in this weeks five frugal things post. I will start off with a nice little haul I saved from going in the bin this week. There is a food hub fairly local to my house, I don’t use it very often as their ethos is more about people in need rather than food waste. However, if I spot they have posted on Olio this usually means they have a large surplus available to everyone. I popped down this week as we were low on bananas and I thought I could pick up some rolls for lunch too.
2. It was my birthday recently and I noticed some of the apps I have on my phone like Costa, Boots and Shopmium all had free offers available especially for my birthday. I got a free box of Celebrations chocolates from Shopmium, a free cake from Costa and some extra points on my Boots Advantage Card.
3. I haven’t mentioned this before but we have been in dispute with our energy supplier over a faulty gas meter that was measuring our usage inaccurately causing a bill of over £2000. Let’s just say we were according to the meter using enough gas for three streets worth of houses. After months of dreadful customer service, we raised a complaint with the Ombudsmen and I’m happy to say it has now been resolved. I suppose I’m telling you this because it pays to be frugal and check your readings regularly, keeping a note of everything. We are now in credit with new meters installed but we will not be staying with this supplier.
In the new year, I will be searching for a new supplier with excellent customer service at the top of my requirements. Sometimes peace of mind is much more important than price.
4. I tried another Too Good To Go bag from the Spar this week and this one was much better. This one cost £3.09 which I think is a bargain.
5. A really simple thing I’ve done this week to save money is to go into the post office and change a £20 note into a bag of £1 coins. You might be thinking how on earth is this money-saving but bear with me. This time of year school will unexpectedly send letters requesting £1 for this and £1 for that, this usually involves a last-minute dash to the ATM to withdraw cash which then we have to buy something with to get some change. Having a bag of coins ready to go has been so useful and something I think I will do every month to cover unexpected requests for cash.
