Top Gardening Mistakes you Don’t Realize you Are Making

If you want your garden to look the best, then you need to avoid these top gardening mistakes. Look below to find out more.

Too Much Mulch

It’s a common sight in a lot of yards, to see a mound of mulch around the base of a tree. One thing to take note of is that mulch helps to hold moisture and when this happens against the base of a plant’s stem or trunk, you may find that it encourages decay. This is the last thing you need, as it will invite insects and all kinds of diseases. Roots may also circle the mulch bed, as they would if they were inside a plastic pot. If you want to fix this then make sure that you have 2-3 inches of mulch and then pull it away from the tree, so it’s more like a doughnut rather than a volcano.

Forgetting about Structures

Sure, plants are great but at the same time, you need to give some thought to the structures in your garden. Do you have a space big enough to accommodate a summer house? If so then make sure that you invest in that. Do you feel as though you have space for a greenhouse or garden office? Go for it. Structures are sometimes the best way for you to improve the overall aesthetic of your home, so make sure you look into them.

Not Planting Flowers

Another mistake so many people make is that they do not plant flowers. At the end of the day, moths and butterflies are crucial to your garden’s ecosystem. Many edible plants require pollination so welcome bees if you can. Make the winged workers work for you by planting some lavender, bee balm, and even some herbs. Oregano, fennel, and thyme are all very good options here, so make sure that you keep this in mind.

Planting in the Wrong Spot

Shade-loving plants may look great if you put them by the front door, but they won’t last very long. This applies to sun-loving plants that are put in shade too. You will soon find that they do not bloom or thrive. One way for you to work around this would be for you to put the right plant in the right place. Take the time to study the plants you have and take steps to make sure that you are giving them the full benefit. If you can do this, you are bound to give your garden a boost.

Not Checking Hardiness

Your new shrub might have done fantastically over the summer, but when winter rolls around, it may be a crispy pile of sticks. If this is the case then you need to check the description of the plant. Make sure that it can survive in your hardiness zone before you purchase. If you don’t then you may find that you end up making major mistakes that cannot be rectified. Talking with your local garden shop is also wise, as most of the time, they really know their stuff and can advise you accordingly.
