This week has been full of opportunities for learning and it’s not just the kids that have benefited. It’s been a busy but productive week where we’ve all been putting our brain cells to good use.
The kids are both doing after-school clubs this term, on the same night too which is a huge bonus. Daisy is doing science again, it’s one of her favourite subjects she loves doing experiments and learning how things work. This week she investigated the world of mini-beasts, she chose to investigate the centipede and found out lots of facts about them. She came home with a plan for a mini-beast habitat to show us. Learning is so much more fun if it’s about something you are really interested in I think.
Jake has been going to construction club, I’m not exactly what he’s learning as he doesn’t really tell me much about it. He’s having fun though and that’s what’s important.
On Tuesday morning I went to the first parent workshop of the year in Jake’s class. This time it was all about phonics, we got to watch our children in a typical session to see the sort of activities they do. The whole purpose of the workshop is so we, as parents can help them to learn at home too. I always really enjoy these sessions and always come away having learned a thing or two as well. The kids use words like digraph, phonemes, and graphemes which I think for reception class is mighty impressive.
I’ve also been learning this week, it’s an unexpected bonus to reading lots of books. When I’m reading I often have to pause and google the meaning of a word or look up a person or place that the book is describing. I’ve learned so much and extended my vocabulary just by picking up a book. I do this with movies as well, especially if I’m watching something based on a real person or event. Every day is a school day or so the saying goes.
You might enjoy my previous word of the week post, Kindness.
Sooooo I don’t know what those words mean and now I’m going to have to look them up…well that’s embarassing, but awesome that they’ll learning words like that at such a young age! Thanks for teaching me something 🙂 #WotW
I had to look them up too !
I’m going to have to look up those words too. I love learning new things, so that’s a great word in my opinion. Thanks for linking up to #wotw xx
Me too Anne, you learn something new every day x
Ahh! My girls used to love the after school clubs at Primary school. They were always fun and learned so much. My youngest went to construction club a few years ago and all she did was play with Lego. lol She loved it though.
It sounds like there has been a lot of learning going on which is a good thing x
I think that’s probably what Jake has been doing at construction club too x
They are starting them young with the terms. Much easier than leaving it to the last couple of years at Primary, as my younger two had before SATs. Should all be second nature by the time they get to year 6. Daisy’s science class Sounds fun. I love mini-beasts. Always something new to learn with insects. Like your idea of looking up meanings and definitions as you go along. Life would be flat if there was nothing left to learn. #wotw
I agree, I’m glad they are learning now in preparation x
they are big words with complex meanings for small children.
Handy that they both go on the same afternoon, makes life much easier. #wotw
So much easier than traipsing back and to for them x
My kids school to lunchtime clubs and Madam goes to one everyday – including construction club, which in her case is Lego building 🙂
Madam didn’t use those words until year 5… pity that school didn’t teach them the more basic principle of how to use such words and where they should go.. anyway I’m glad your two are doing so well 😀
Lunchtime clubs sound like fun, I think Jake’s construction club probably involves lego too x
I look up words, events, people, places as I read books and blogs. This is especially true if the writing is from another country or culture. Sometimes a phrase say from the UK might be something we don’t use in the US. Then I’m sitting trying to figure out what’s up. Good post! #MMBC
I often find myself looking up things when reading books too – it is such a wonderful way to learn. Being interested in something makes such a huge difference. The parent workshop sounds interesting – I have to admit I’m not entirely sure I’ve completely got to grips with some of those words used in reception class! #WotW
