How To Manage Motorcycle Safety For Your Grown Child

Two things are generally true – motorcycles are undeniably cool, and look awesome on the road, yet most people know they’re more dangerous than driving in a car. For that reason, except for enjoying the hobby themselves, most parents are trepidacious when their (grown) child signifies a desire to ride one.

That being said, with careful training, attention to detail, safety preparations, and good conduct on the road, the chances of any issues happening are drastically reduced. But managing motorcycle safety for your grown child isn’t about telling them what to do (after all, they’re grown), but gently pushing them in the right direction.

Let us show you how:

Encourage Full-Scale Training & Advanced Schemes

Proper training and not just flying through the course as fast as possible really does matter, not just in skill but in confidence and safety. A basic license course is essential, but if they’re serious about riding, nudge them toward advanced safety courses too. These teach things like defensive riding, handling bad weather, and reacting to unpredictable drivers (because, let’s be honest, other drivers are half the problem).

Point Them To The Best, Most Caring Dealerships & Communities

Not all motorcycle dealerships are created equal and it’s worth knowing that, as some will just try to sell them the biggest, flashiest bike possible. Others actually take the time to match riders with a bike that suits their experience level, such as Norton Motorcycles. Encouraging them to go to a reputable dealer (one that won’t put a beginner on a bike meant for stunt riding) is a good move, and it’s always comforting to know your loved one remains in safe hands.

Motorcycle communities can also be surprisingly great for safety because none of them are blind to the dangers. A lot of experienced riders take mentorship seriously meaning that you’ll find them sharing tips on everything from the best gear to avoiding risky roads. It can’t hurt to help your child find that kind of venue, though of course, make sure everything is above board.

Don’t Dismiss Them, Let Them Educate You As To Their Passion

It’s easy to react with “Why would you want to do that? It’s dangerous!” But shutting them down completely won’t stop them, it’ll just make them less likely to talk to you about it. Instead, try letting them explain what they love about it. Maybe they’ve been watching MotoGP since they were a kid and they’ve fallen in love with the art of it, even if they have zero inclination to go pro or try to engage in that sport. Maybe they love the freedom of the open road and want to do a European road trip at some point soon, or maybe they just think motorcycles look cool (fair enough).

With this advice, we hope you can feel more confident when managing motorcycle safety for your own child. Perhaps you’ll even develop a nurturing love for that practice, or know what your child is talking about when they teach you about the whole affair.
