A Guide to Accessing Photos From Anywhere With iCloud

What is iCloud?

If you’re still asking this question nothing else will make sense, so let’s cover it really quickly. iCloud is Apple’s answer to a cloud storage service for Apple devices. This service is what allows the back-up and sync of your media across your devices. Simply put, this gives you access to all your files backed up on iCloud using any device!

If you aren’t using an Apple product, your web browser is compatible, so don’t worry. Also, with storage spaces of 5GB to 2TB, running out of storage is the least of your concerns.

Once you set up your iCloud, the files that you upload are automatically saved on both your device and online. This lets you log on to a different device and access your files from there if you need to.

iCloud also gives you the ability to automatically sync all of your files. This saves you the hassle of always updating your photos or files. iCloud now does it for you on all your devices.

Setting Up iCloud

To get started with iCloud, you’ll want to set it up on all your devices. Make sure your devices have the latest update to proceed.

For Mac devices, the next step is to sign in using your Apple ID. You can find this in the Apple Menu under system preferences. Afterward, click on “Apple ID” and enter your Apple ID information.

When you sign in, iCloud will automatically activate on your device. Now you have the option to change your iCloud preferences. This is mostly about allowing access to certain apps and making sure you have everything running.

For iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, the process is relatively the same. You’ll want to update your OS to the latest version then sign in to your Apple ID. To do this, go to your device’s settings and look for “Apple ID.”

As with the Mac, iCloud will turn on once signed in. Staying in your settings app, look for the “iCloud” menu in “Apple ID” and make the changes you want. The options and things you can edit are the same as those in Mac iCloud settings.

Setting Up on a Windows PC

iCloud isn’t only restricted to Apple devices. You can also get the same files you’ve uploaded to iCloud on your Windows PC. The first thing you want to do is download iCloud on your Windows PC then sign in using your Apple ID.

After you’ve activated the app, choose the services that you want to use from it. Once you’ve selected the ones you want, click on “Apply”. Windows will automatically create a folder for the upload and automatic sync of your files.

How to Access iCloud for Mac

Since files are always automatically synced across all your devices, you might not realize how much you use a file. Accessing a certain file that you’ve saved or gotten from someone else is easier when you use iCloud Drive.

The iCloud Drive is where you can find all your uploaded files from one place. It works as a document or photo library. When using a different device, you can use it to download photos and other files from iCloud to your device easily. Find more information on the iCloud photo library here.

For your Mac device, the simplest way of finding any app is by using Spotlight. All you need to do is press the command key plus the spacebar. Type in iCloud Drive and click on the icon for it.

Here you can access any files saved on any of the apps you’re using the drive with. Whether it’s your gallery, notes, or calendar these are all found on the Drive. You can open up any file from one place as well as make any changes and update them.

How to Access iCloud for Other Apple Devices

To access your iCloud Drive on and iPhone or iPad, make sure that you’ve turned on the “iCloud Drive” setting on your device. Once you have iCloud Drive on, you can access the files on it by opening up the Files app. This is only available to iOS 11 or higher so make sure you’ve updated.

On the Files app, you will see all of the documents, media that you’ve been working on. You can use either the Recent or Browse tab to find what you need. Again, any changes you make on the Files app will update all other apps and devices.

You can also access your files online through the official iCloud site. Simply log in with your Apple ID account and everything else works the same way.
