Wednesday Hodgepodge-Life Lessons & Memories

Wednesday Hodgepodge-Life Lessons & Memories

It’s time to answer some more  Wednesday Hodgepodge questions from Joyce at From This Side of the Pond.

1. What’s a lesson you’ve learned from a mistake?

There are so many to choose from; this question brings to mind the saying, “If you’ve never made mistakes, then you’ve never made anything”. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from a mistake is that other people are not responsible for your happiness; you are.

2. Do you salt food while you’re cooking or let diners add their own?  What’s a food you think must be salted? Do you like pepper?

I do like to add salt when I’m cooking, but I think it’s out of habit; it’s just something I’ve always done. The things I think must be salted are bacon and mashed potatoes; both taste wrong without salt, in my opinion. I like black pepper but not white pepper. I don’t really add pepper very much when cooking, although I don’t mind the flavour; it’s just not something I reach for.

3. What was the last gathering you attended and what did you do there?

I don’t attend gatherings very often; the last one I can think of was my daughter’s Engagement party over a year ago. We celebrated the engagement of my daughter and her partner, ate delicious food, danced to some questionable music, and had lots of fun.

4. Your favorite shade of purple? What’s your favorite purple flower?

Purple is my second favourite colour, and I love the shades lilac and true purple. My favourite purple flowers are the beautiful purple geraniums that grow each year in our garden.

5. Share a favorite spring travel memory.

I don’t think I’ve ever travelled during the spring; we have always holidayed in late May, early June. We do try to have lots of days out during spring while the weather is mild, as none of us enjoy it being too hot.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I’ve been listening to a podcast on BBC Sounds called Short History Of…, and I’m a little bit addicted. It reminded me how much I love history and how there are things you think you know about events in time, but you don’t actually know the facts.

It also reminded me that history teaches us that things happen in cycles, over and over again, and lessons are not always learned.

  1. I couldn’t think of a spring trip/travel either! I have a really dumb question. Do you actually salt your bacon as you are cooking it or when you plate it? I don’t eat bacon often but I was thinking it is kind of salty already. I actually love salt though I try hard not to use too much.

    1. Not a dumb question at all, in the UK where I live you can buy bacon smoked and un-smoked and I always buy the smoked version. The un-smoked is generally low salt and I find it too bland.

  2. That is so true that other people are not responsible for your happiness; you are! Very wise words!
Those flowers are so pretty, purple is my favourite colour. x

  3. The purple geranium is lovely. I don’t think you see that color often in a geranium here. I saw some that had a mix of purple and white in their blooms at the nursery recently and they were beautiful. Yes, we are responsible for us. It’s a good lesson to remember. Have a great day!

  4. I only have one recipe that calls for white pepper (Creamed Corn) and I don’t think you would be able to distinguish it in the final result. The bacon we buy here in the U.S. is pretty well salted but I can understand needing to salt it if you buy an unsalted variety. Good lessons to learn. Happy Hodgepodge to you.
